Violence myth dogs game day
Despite the expected surge in testosterone and alcohol consumption on Super Bowl Sunday, it's not a day to expect a jump in domestic violence, according to law enforcement and victims' advocate groups. The link between Super Bowl Sunday and violence against women, with the absence of data from major studies, appears to be myth. Domestic violence in the state is a problem, but not because of the game, said Cathy Zeiner, executive director of the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut. "There's not a correlation," Zeiner said, though "alcohol does play a role in exacerbating a violent situation.

Flights cancelled amid new worries about al-Qaida
Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP): Six U.S.-bound flights from England, Scotland and France were cancelled Saturday because of security concerns. The U.S. government said it had fresh indications of al-Qaida's continued interest in targeting commercial planes flying to the United States. British Airways grounded the same flight scheduled Sunday and Monday from London's Heathrow Airport to Dulles International Airport outside Washington, as well as the return flights. Also canceled was a flight from London to Miami on Sunday.

Pioli's on personnel mission: Players must have character
By Michael Felger Saturday, January 31, 2004 HOUSTON - All week, Scott Pioli tried to explain the Patriots [stats, news]' method of picking players, and it was almost as if the national reporters asking the questions couldn't believe the answers. After all, a team can't possibly place that much emphasis on intelligence, toughness and discipline and still win in the NFL, can it? Every team must sacrifice at least some of the intangibles to get players who can run fast enough and jump high enough, right? Pioli, the Pats' personnel director, fielded every question and merely repeated his philosophy.

Starkville Daily News Online
By DAVE GOLDBERG HOUSTON - If the Carolina Panthers win the Super Bowl, it will be with power. If the New England Patriots win, it will be with finesse, deception, intimidation and experience. So while Sunday's NFL championship game may not feature football's biggest stars, it could be a fascinating chess match between two of the game's headiest coaches _ accomplished grandmaster Bill Belichick of New England and Carolina's quickly ascending John Fox. Don't look for glamorous quarterbacks. The most famous are otherwise occupied.

Troops eager for Super interlude
By Chris Brummitt The Associated Press Sunday, February 1, 2004 TIKRIT, Iraq -- The Super Bowl parties for U.S. troops in Iraq will start hours before dawn, and there won't be any beer. But at least in Tikrit, soldiers have a lavish venue: They'll be watching a cinema-sized screen in a former palace of Saddam Hussein. At bases across the country, the 130,000 American troops will be able to catch the game between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots live (starting at 2:25 a.m. Monday, Iraqi time) in mess halls and recreation centers.

Vegas casinos cancel Super Bowl parties
Vegas hotels canceling Super Bowl parties LAS VEGAS (AP) - Some of Las Vegas' biggest hotel-casinos are canceling Super Bowl parties and handing out refunds to thousands of guests after the NFL threatened legal action against those who broadcast the big game on big-screen TVs. Several hotels received letters last week informing them that their parties were "unauthorized use of NFL intellectual property." NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league only recently became aware of these large-scale parties planned in Las Vegas and elsewhere around the country.

Elway, Sanders sail into Hall of Fame on their first try
It turns out they would have been a backfield worthy of two first-ballot entries into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "It seems the Hall of Fame is something that happens to somebody else," Sanders said shortly after the Class of 2004 was announced at the site of Super Bowl XXXVIII. "It happens to Dick Butkus, Walter Payton. I feel truly out of place right now." Most would disagree, which is why Sanders and Elway took the express lane into the Hall. They go in with former Vikings defensive end Carl Eller and former Eagles, Rams and Raiders offensive lineman Bob Brown.
