Some of Las Vegas' biggest hotel-casinos are canceling Super Bowl parties and handing out refunds to thousands of guests after the NFL threatened legal action against those who broadcast the big game on big-screen TVs.
Several hotels received letters last week informing them that their parties were "unauthorized use of NFL intellectual property."
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league only recently became aware of these large-scale parties planned in Las Vegas and elsewhere around the country.

Bracket Buster games won't help many tourney hopes
The pairings for ESPN's Bracket Buster will be finalized Sunday and announced in full on Monday night. But things aren't looking good for the mid-major schools who think an extra win in the Feb. 22 made-for-TV nonconference showdowns can help their NCAA Tournament resumes.
Most mid-majors are currently on the outside looking in at the NCAA bracket because they simply have not had enough quality nonleague wins. The lone exception is Gonzaga, which would easily make the field of 65 even if it doesn't win the West Coast Conference.

The Gold Sheet
This Sunday there will be an estimated $75 million wagered on the Super Bowl via legal sports books in Nevada. Millions more will be bet with illegal bookies across the United States. Even more will be funneled into online betting sites throughout the Caribbean. Bob Scucci, sports-book manager at the Stardust in Las Vegas, estimates that, all told, "There will be well over $1 billion bet on the Super Bowl." Literally hundreds of millions will be riding on each half-point adjustment that gets made to the betting line.

Super Bowl: Defense, tough play to define Cats vs. Pats
By GREG HARDWIG, gshardwig@naplesnews.com

HOUSTON - The New England Patriots have made a habit out of not being themselves all year. Today, they'll have to do it, in a sense, to win their second Super Bowl in three years.
Just like the Patriots two years ago, the Carolina Panthers have come out of nowhere to go 11-5, make the playoffs behind a little-known quarterback who was a backup entering the season, then make it to the Super Bowl and come in as the underdog.
MATT YOUNG: Cashing in on Super Bowl betting
Those workers won't have much time for chatter about Tom Brady or Jake Delhomme, because, Carruthers says, he expects them to be answering phones from 150,000 of his customers that day.
Carruthers is part of a growing industry that has made meeting bookies passe. Online gambling - which includes Internet casinos and sports books - generated $5.7 billion in revenue last year, up 42 percent from 2002, according to research firm Christiansen Capital Advisers. The firm predicts the business to bring in $11.6 billion by 2006.
Big bucks will be bet on big game
"Christiansen Capital Advisors estimates that $375 million to $400 million will be wagered online for the Super Bowl," David Carruthers, chief executive officer of BetonSports.com in Costa Rica, said in a telephone interview. "We will take in excess of 150,000 calls on Sunday."
The average wager at Betonsports.com is $111 per customer. The company has 700 different ways to bet on the game, ranging from which advertisement is the most popular to who catches the first pass.
Legal betting in Las Vegas on the Super Bowl pulled in nearly $72 million last year.
Plenty of local sports fans will be plunking down some cash on the game, too.
